Today’s weekly capture is dedicated just to Winston. The two of us have just returned from a four day trip to the Greek island of Leros. It’s a long time since I’ve spent a good chunk of one on one time with him, and I felt like I got to know him all over again.
I knew the nature of the trip would be quite overwhelming for him, but the parts he found overwhelming were not what I expected. When I look back on how many hours he spent listening to adults talking, sat waiting for aeroplanes, walking, helping and playing by himself, I know that I asked a lot of him, but I feel so proud of him. I don’t often say how proud I am of my boys, because (I feel) it goes without saying, but he was such great company. He loved playing with the refugee children and they were so kind and inviting. He keeps asking when he can go back to see his friends, and it has been difficult to explain that those children have no idea where they will be living next month, nor next year.
I’ll be writing properly about our trip over the next coming weeks. It was more eye opening than I ever expected, and lots of things I learnt were really shocking. On the flip side, the volunteers who dedicate their lives to helping refugees are some of the most incredible people I have ever associated with, and it was such a privilege to hear their stories.
Have a fantastic week, and happy holidays!
You really SHOULD be proud – he was an absolute star!
