Expressing love for the National Railway Museum in York

I never expected the National Railway Museum in York to become one of our favourite hang outs. For the boys – of course, but it’s a place I’ve really come to love it too. There is so much space for them both to run around and I adore all of the nostalgia – the signs, the shiny engines, the flags and the design. It is all so beautifully done and the café is rather yummy too.

Win has a really good memory, so it is impossible to miss anything you did anywhere the time before (like most children I suspect), which is why our trip always includes a ride on the road train into York city centre for a wander, a ride on the miniature railway, watching the model railways, a look in the shop, sitting on the bullet train, watching the turntable demonstration, a play at the park and a long look at all the steam engines. We’ve been four or five times in the past year and I find it a really low stress day out, particularly since Ru started walking.

The driver of the miniature railway let the two of them have a moment in the driving seat – I think it made Win’s day!

The road train goes to and from York every half an hour and takes about 5 minutes. We get off for an hour or so, and get an ice cream if it’s sunny. I love not having the buggy and letting them explore the cobbled streets, even if they get in the way of others (just a tad). Win’s vintage style road train ticket is now firmly in his treasure box.

I wouldn’t say it’s essential that your children like trains to have a really wonderful day at the National Railway Museum. The museum is free, but the car park is £9.00 for the whole day. To be honest, I find parking in York a total nightmare – expensive and hard to find, so I like knowing I will definitely get a spot!

The road train is brilliant! I think it’s £1 each, so a good way of getting into York. It drops you off right by the minster xx
