After Christmas last year Aldi were selling greatly reduced gingerbread house making kits, so we bought one. This year we said we were going to try and make a few to give to people.
What the house was supposed to look like:
What it actually looked like:
I cannot stop laughing. How is it possible for it to go so badly wrong? What would your thoughts be if somebody dropped this off on your doorstep? It looks terrible but hopefully the receivers will appreciate the effort rather than the finished product. The only consolation is that I know the gingerbread, chocolate and sweets do actually taste rather nice. It wasn’t quite the family activity we’d hoped – Winston could not stop eating the chocolate buttons and smarties so had to be banned towards the end. He was doing so well! We dropped it off last night with a note and miraculously it stayed in one piece.
Recipe – makes enough for one house
- 250g unsalted butter
- 200g dark muscovado sugar
- 7 tbsp golden syrup
- 600g plain flour
- 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
- 4 tsp ground ginger
Taken from the BBC Good Food website.
For the cement we just used water and icing sugar until it created a thick icing.
Some pics of the process, I’m hoping attempt number two will look slightly more appealing:
